How to Assemble Kabuto (Helmet)
Displaying samurai armor is both an art and a ritual — a way to honor tradition and wish for protection and strength.
Included Parts and Names
The following items are included in this armor set.
Each part has a specific role in traditional samurai display.
Some models may not include all components.
Kabuto Parts – Short Descriptions
Kuwagata (Helmet crest)
Horn-shaped crest symbolizing courage, light, and divine protection.
Maetate / Ryuzu (Front Ornament / Dragon Head)
Front emblem, often a dragon or deity, symbolizing strength and spirit.
Kuwagata-dai (Crest Base / Holder)
Base that supports and aligns the front ornaments securely.
Mabizashi (Visor)
Brim protecting the face; defines the helmet’s sharp expression.
Hachi (Helmet Bowl)
Main dome of the helmet; protects the head and embodies endurance.
Fukikaeshi (Turnbacks / Side Flaps)
Curved side flaps protecting the face and displaying crests.
Fukusa (Decorative Cloth)
Cloth placed beneath the helmet, symbolizing purity and elegance.
Shinobi-o (Helmet Cord)
Braided cord securing the helmet; represents unity and harmony.
Kabutobitsu (Helmet Box / Display Base)
Wooden box for storage and display, supporting the entire set.
- Front and Back of the Armor Chest
Identify the Front and Back of the Armor Chest
Some armor boxes have a clear front and back.
The front usually features decorative metal fittings or a family crest, while the back is plain or has hinges.
If your set does not have a visible difference, either side can face forward.
- Unpack and Check the Contents
Remove each piece from the armor chest and confirm the included parts.
Carefully take out the items from the box — such as the helmet, crest, cords, cloth, and stand — and check that all main parts are included.
Some products may not include every piece shown; the contents vary depending on the set.
- Setting the Helmet Stand
Place the support pole (shinboku) on top of the helmet box.
Align it centrally from left to right, and position it slightly toward the front rather than exactly in the middle.
⚠️ Note: The side with the small projection should face forward — this is the front of the stand.
- Placing the Fukusa (Decorative Cloth)
Drape the fukusa diagonally in a diamond shape with one corner facing front.
Place the fukusa so that its corner points toward the front of the display (as shown).
If the fukusa has a family crest or decorative pattern, ensure it faces forward.
Placing a thin sheet of paper underneath helps shape it neatly.
⚠️ Some sets do not include a fukusa.
- Attaching the Maetate / Ryuzu (Front Ornament)
Insert the front ornament into the holder at the center front of the helmet.
Gently insert the maetate (front ornament) into the socket at the top center of the helmet.
If your set includes a ryuzu (dragon head ornament), attach it in the same way.
⚠️ Some models do not include the ryuzu.
- Attaching the Kuwagata (Crest)
Insert the kuwagata (horn-shaped crests) into the side holders so that the tips point outward.
Align each crest carefully and insert it straight into the metal holders on both sides of the helmet.
Make sure the tips face outward for correct orientation.
For best results, wear thin gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints on the polished metal surface.
- Placing the Kabuto on the Fukusa
Set the helmet (kabuto) carefully on top of the fukusa.
Adjust the forward, backward, and side-to-side tilt to achieve a balanced and elegant appearance.
Step back and visually check the overall symmetry and form.
A well-centered position enhances the harmony of the display.
⚠️ Notes for Wearable Armor and Helmets
If the armor or helmet is designed to be wearable, please observe the following precautions:
- Although sized for children, do not force it to fit if the size is not appropriate.
- Ensure the wearer’s body can safely support the weight before putting it on.
- Metal components are used—take care to avoid injury during attachment and removal.
- Do not wear for extended periods of time.
- Use only in a safe, open area, free from surrounding hazards or obstacles.
